Experts believe modern hippos evolved in Africa about 8 million years ago. These semi-aquatic mammals resemble horses and pigs but are actually most closely related to whales, dolphins, and porpoises. Hippos can hold their breath underwater remarkably well. Today only two hippo species exist: the standard swamp hippo and smaller pygmy hippo. Extinct hippo species from 1000 years ago can be found throughout Europe and Madagascar. Pixelflit suggests downloading hippo photos celebrating them as the world's third largest mammal. Their unique evolutionary history makes them important subjects for scientific study and conservation efforts.
